About Smart SustainChemE
The Smart SustainChemE (Smart Chemical Engineering for Sustainable Development) Erasmus Mundus Joint Masters (EMJM) is an international master's programme designed to prepare the next generation of chemical engineers to address the challenges of sustainable industry. Combining chemical engineering, digitalisation and artificial intelligence, it focuses on the design and optimisation of sustainable processes and products.
Over two years (120 ECTS), students develop skills in sustainable chemical engineering, environmental technologies and smart digital tools, with opportunities to specialise in an advanced field and complete a research or industry internship.
An International Consortium
Led by the École Nationale Supérieure des Industries Chimiques (ENSIC) at Université de Lorraine, Smart SustainChemE brings together four European universities with complementary expertise in chemical engineering, sustainability and digital technologies:
- Université de Lorraine (France)
- Technical University of Crete (Greece)
- Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava (Slovakia)
- Hasselt University (Belgium)

La Sapienza University of Rome and eight associated European industrial partners contribute to the programme's academic and professional network. This collaboration connects students with a broad range of expertise and helps align the curriculum with the evolving needs of industry and research.
Programme Overview and Mobility Scheme

The Smart SustainChemE programme combines a common first-year curriculum, a specialised second-year pathway and a final research or industry internship. Students study in different European countries, gaining international experience while developing technical, digital and intercultural skills.
Semester 1 – ENSIC, Université de Lorraine, France: Students acquire the foundations of sustainable chemical engineering, process design and optimisation, life cycle assessment, sustainable polymers chemistry and process and the application of artificial intelligence to engineering challenges.
Semester 2 – Technical University of Crete, Greece: The curriculum focuses on advanced process dynamics and control, catalytic technologies, environmental engineering, waste management and pollution control.
Semester 3 – Specialisation: students choose one of three tracks:
- Smart Cybernetics for Chemical Engineers - STU, Slovakia: automation, process control, modelling and digitalisation in chemical and food engineering.
- Sustainable Packaging and Advanced Materials - UHasselt, Belgium: sustainable materials, packaging technologies and circular design.
- Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Process and Product Design - ENSIC, UL, France: AI-based approaches to process optimisation, product development and sustainability-oriented decision-making.
Semester 4 – Master's thesis and internship: a 16- to 24-week research project or internship in an academic laboratory, research organisation or industrial company. This experience allows students to apply their knowledge to real-world challenges and prepare for their professional careers.
Language and culture courses, project-based learning and shared academic activities complement the curriculum throughout the programme.
Depending on their chosen specialisation, graduates are expected to receive two or three nationally recognised Master's degrees from the partner universities. A joint Diploma Supplement documents the programme’s integrated curriculum, mobility pathways and shared learning outcomes.
Who can apply?
Smart SustainChemE welcomes applications from candidates worldwide with a strong academic background in a relevant field.
Applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Academic qualification: a Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering or an equivalent qualification from an internationally recognized university is required. The degree must correspond to at least 180 ECTS credits and be in a relevant field, such as Chemical Engineering, Chemistry (depending on the curriculum’s physics and mathematics content), or Petroleum Engineering. Applicants must also have a sufficiently high academic average.
- English proficiency: at least B2 advanced level, demonstrated through an accepted certificate or an applicable exemption.
- Application documents: applicants must provide required supporting documents and certify that the information submitted is accurate.
- Specialisation preferences: applicants must indicate their two preferred specialisation tracks in ranked order.
Admission is competitive, and applicants must meet all eligibility requirements to be considered.
Applications for the 2027-2029 cohort will be opened from mid-November 2026 until the end of January 2027.
